Wayne Hu 20 thin cropped.jpg Wayne Hu is quickly becoming recognized as one of today's most exciting and versatile singing actors in both musical theatre and opera. In his brief career, he has already appeared with some of the musical world's biggest names, including Tony-winners Brian Stokes Mitchell, George Hearn, John Lloyd Young and Patti Lupone, as well as stars of TV and film such as Lea Michele and Melora Hardin.

The exceptionally rare combination of Wayne's precise vocal and dramatic technique, elegant musicianship, magnetic stage presence, and uncommon athletic ability has allowed him to portray a broad spectrum of characters ranging from the priveledged playboy Demetrius in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, to the conflicted title role in Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King & I, from the dashing aristocratic Count in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, to the stubborn, resilient governor Horace Tabor in Douglas Moore's The Ballad of Baby Doe, from the charismatic, swashbuckling Pirate King in Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance to the naive, lovelorn sailorboy Anthony Hope in Sondheim's Sweeney Todd.

Wayne is often praised for the expressiveness of his rich baritone as well as his sophisticated characterizations of numerous roles encompassing nearly every musical style. The pinpoint accurary in which he delivers the speedy coloratura of Handel is comparable to that of a Baroque specialist, yet he has the necessary depth and range required to sing all the standard baritone repertoire from Mozart to Verdi. He has received particular acclaim for his ability to sustain unusually long phrases in operas of the bel canto style, but also sounds perfectly at home in most Broadway musicals, classical and contemporary.

After receiving his Bachelor of Music in voice education from The College of New Jersey in 2005, Wayne balanced a busy schedule of performing in both theatre and opera, while maintaining a successful private voice studio out of northern New Jersey. With a desire to perfect his vocal technique and acting, he returned to the world of academia in 2007 and chose Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music to pursue a Master of Music degree in vocal performance. At Indiana, Wayne studied voice under the tuteladge of Timothy Noble and Andreas Poulimenos and coached with Carol Vaness. He was the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards, including the coveted Wilfred Bain Opera Fellowship and appeared in leading roles and as principal soloist in various operas and choral works. Although he generally maintained a light class schedule in order to allow for occasional engagements outside of Indiana, he was able to complete the last of his graduate coursework in 2011.

Wayne Hu1.JPG Prior to his training at Indiana, Wayne spent the summer of 2004 as part of Opera North's Young Artist Program, where he performed the roles of Gregorio in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette and Starveling in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. As a Resident Opera Artist with Pine Mountain Music Festival in 2006, he appeared as The Speaker in The Magic Flute. In the summer of 2007, he made his mainstage debut with The Princeton Festival as Moralès in Carmen.

Wayne made his professional theatre debut in 2005 in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream with Tri-State Actors Theatre and has since appeared in principal roles on the Equity stage throughout the country. In the summer of 2008, Wayne made his debut at The Hollywood Bowl in LAPHIL's staged concert of Les Misérables as part of a star-studded cast. In August of 2010, he was honored to share the stage with yet another cast featuring several distinguished musical theatre legends in Ravinia Festival's Annie Get Your Gun under the baton of Paul Gemignani conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

In 2011, Wayne headlined a critically-acclaimed production of The King & I with Chicago's Porchlight Music Theatre. He also returned to the world of opera in the fall, with a debut with Tulsa Opera as Fiorello in The Barber of Seville. His 2012 schedule includes mainstage roles in Dead Man Walking and Madama Butterfly with Tulsa Opera and a return to Opera North as Lun Tha in The King & I.
